Good Works

In Our Environment

Langara Fishing Adventures has made many important contributions to the enhancement and conservation of the environments we operate in.

At Langara Island we support numerous studies on a wide variety of species, including killer and humpback whales, peregrine falcons, sea lions and, of course, salmon.

Langara Island’s tremendous abundance makes it an ideal location for salmon research, and we have worked closely with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada on numerous studies, including DNA sampling and the defining of survival rates for sport caught and released salmon.

The innovative ‘tag-and-release’ tournament format we created–used each year during our $150,000 Haida Gwaii Tournament and the Rick Hansen Fishing Challenge–provides valuable information on salmon migration and growth rates from the numerous tags that are later recovered.

Through these activities, and our support of organizations such as the Pacific Salmon Foundation ,the Queen Charlotte Islands Salmon Unlimited Society, and Trout Unlimited , we are actively working to ensure the resources we rely upon are abundant, healthy and sustainable for generations to come.

In Our Community

Langara Fishing Adventures supports a wide variety of charities and fundraising events in British Columbia and other communities, and is directly involved in the following organizations as official sponsors:

Fernandez Earle Scholarship Foundation

Established in memory of two long-time Langara guests—Kane Fernandez of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Roger Earle of Vancouver, BC—the Fernandez Earle Scholarship Foundation is dedicated to building a bond between the island cultures of Hawaii and Haida Gwaii, and to strengthening these communities through education.

To achieve these goals, the Foundation has raised funds and established endowments at three Universities—the University of Hawaii, Hawaiian Pacific University, and Simon Fraser University in British Columbia.

These endowments are funding an annual scholarship award for a deserving Haida Gwaii graduate, and a student exchange program between the Marine Biology departments of Simon Fraser University and the University of Hawaii.

To put the Haida Gwaii scholarship into perspective, consider that the islands have a total resident population of fewer than 5,000 people, and as few as 25-30 high school graduates each year.

"This opportunity has made an impact on students who never considered studying abroad, and who are now daring to dream it could be them" — Claudette Lavoie, principal of Queen Charlotte Secondary School.

Rick Hansen Fishing Challenge

Since 1998, Langara Fishing Lodge has played host to the Rick Hansen Fishing Challenge. Langara is very proud of our ongoing relationship with this great Canadian, and with his foundation’s goal of raising money and awareness for spinal cord injury research.

Since its inception, the Challenge has directly raised over $800,000 for the Rick Hansen Foundation, and connections made at the event have helped to raise many millions more.

Rick and his Foundation have also assisted Langara in our efforts to improve accessibility at our lodges for people with mobility impairment.

Rugby Canada

Langara Fishing Adventures is a longtime supporter of rugby at all levels in Canada.

We are proud to be an official sponsor of Rugby Canada and our National Teams, as well as the British Columbia Rugby Union and the University of BC Old Boys Ravens Rugby
