History

A Better Place to Fish

Langara Fishing Adventures began as an idea, hatched by a group of friends wanting what all anglers want - a better place to fish.

In the 1970's and 80's, British Columbia's Campbell River and River's Inlet were well known destinations for salmon fishing.  Back then, the remote Queen Charlotte Islands (now Haida Gwaii) were virtually unknown to even the most well-travelled angler.  Its isolated location kept it undiscovered by the sport fishing community, but tales were told of a fishery here that was more abundant than any other on the West Coast.

Fueled by an adventurous spirit, this group of friends hatched a plan to venture north to these remote waters, and took a chance on a small island named Langara.

The Pioneers of Langara Island

Sport fishing at Langara Island began in 1985, when our founders, Rick Bourne and the three Noble brothers, towed a renovated 120-foot paddle-wheeler up to Langara Island, anchored it in a protective cove, and set out to discover the island's secrets.

For those who didn't have the pleasure of joining us at Langara Fishing Lodge in our first few years, imagine venturing out into Parry Pass on a blustery day in a 14-foot fiberglass boat with a 15-hp motor.  And imagine a completely blank page of fishing tips and favourite halibut holes.

Our claim to being the Pioneers of Langara Island is hard-earned, and shared by all of those adventurous guests who joined us in our search to find a better place to fish over 25 years ago.

The Legend Grows

The abundance we found at Langara Island quickly filled our lodge with fishermen, and each season brought further expansion of our operations.  Word also spread about Langara's pristine environment and spectacular diversity of wildlife, and soon adventure travellers were joining avid anglers to share the experience.

In the early 90's, visits by Bob Hope and other celebrities cemented Langara Fishing Lodge's reputation as the new destination of choice for salmon fishing on the West Coast.

The Best of British Columbia

In the years since we first opened Langara Fishing Lodge in 1985, and Langara Island Lodge in 1995, we've also added Kumdis River Lodge, Moosehead Lodge and Alaska View Lodge to our stable of facilities.

Together, our five remote lodges showcase the very best of British Columbia's diverse wilderness, wildlife and sport fishing opportunities:  from world famous salmon and halibut in the abundant waters of Langara Island, to hard-fighting steelhead in the quiet rivers of Haida Gwaii, and wild rainbow trout in the Chilcotin wilderness.
